Watch: Resorts World Catskills new president talks about his plans

ALBANY - All casinos in New York closed Monday after some did so voluntarily before the governors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut collectively decided to order them closed.

Resorts World, owned by the Malaysian-based casino giant Genting, announced it shuttered its sprawling facility at Aqueduct Race Track in Queens and its $1 billion resort in the Catskills. Resorts World Las Vegas – the city's first and only Strip-side destination with a truly legitimate international pedigree – stands poised to inspire wonder in guests from every walk of life, through transformative technology, vintage Vegas hospitality, and exotic, worldwide allure.

Resorts World closed its two massive casinos in New York on Monday after New York City as the state has limited large gathering places, and Rivers Casino in Schenectady also closed.

  • The Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct in Queens is the only casino within New York City's boundaries. The casino opened in 2011 as a racino at Aqueduct, the horse racing track. New York State allows video slot gambling at selected horse racing arenas, hence the name 'racino.' Video slot machines and table games are offered.
  • Went here on a recent trip to resorts world casino in queens. Took advantage of and enjoyed the $30 cash only price fix. Outstanding value and great food. The Caesar salad was nice and light and fresh. With what tasted like a homemade dressing. The filet mignon with mashed potatoes was fantastic. While small, it was again, an outstanding value.

Resorts World, owned by the Malaysian-based casino giant Genting, announced it shuttered its sprawling facility at Aqueduct Race Track in Queens and its $1 billion resort in the Catskills.

“After careful deliberation with New York State officials and our partners at the New York Hotel Trades Council, we have decided to — for the health and safety of our workforce, patrons and community — temporarily close Resorts World Casino New York City and Resorts World Catskills,' the company said in a statement.

Resorts World said it would close for at least two weeks, and 'we are committed to paying our full-time employees during this period.'

Only essential personnel will remain on the grounds.

'We will continue to closely monitor developments regarding COVID-19 and follow additional guidance from New York State. We look forward to announcing when we can welcome patrons back to Resorts World,' the statement continued.

New York casinos closing their doors amid coronavirus

The decision comes after Empire City Casino in Yonkers closed on Saturday and after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday night closed all nightclubs, theaters and concert venues.

The city will also limit its restaurants, bars and cafes to take-out and delivery only by Tuesday morning.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, initially banned all gatherings of more than 500 people and ordered events under 500 to cut their occupancy in half.

Then Monday morning, Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont agreed collectively to close all casinos, gyms and movie theaters and limit restaurants and bars only to takeout orders.

'I've said many times over the past several days that, in our state, we are going to get through this as one New Jersey family,' Murphy said.

'But if we're all in this together, we must work with our neighboring states to act together. The work against coronavirus isn't just up to some of us, it's up to all of us.'

Rivers Casino said it is closing for 14 days, despite no known cases of COVID-19 at the property.

'We are suspending operations out of an abundance of caution and to promote the social distancing recommended by health officials,' the company said in a statement.

'We will continue normal payroll for team members during the 14-day suspension.'

Cuomo didn't put a timeline on when the facilities might reopen, saying it would continually be re-evaluated.

The move comes as four upstate casinos have struggled to meet revenue projections since first opening in 2017, but have seen improvement over the past year.

Nonetheless, del Lago and Resorts World Catskills have been teetering on bankruptcy since opening and closing for an extended period most certainly will not help their bottom lines.

The states' order does not apply to Native American casinos because they have their own compacts with the states.

But the Oneida Indian Nation in central New York said it would close its three casinos, and the Senecas in western New York said it would do the same with its three facilities.

“The COVID-19 outbreak is an unprecedented public safety situation that requires an unprecedented response,” said Seneca Nation President Rickey Armstrong, Sr.

“Given the number of people who visit and work at our facilities, I believe it is in the best interest to suspend our gaming operations until further notice. We are keeping the health and safety of our workers, our guests and our communities above all else.”
